Classroom Resources

We are currently using the book,How Did That Get in My Lunch Box" by Chris Butterworth. During our presentation we talk about careers in agriculture, how food gets from the farm to their table, the importance of healthy eating by discussing the five food groups, and how farming successes and failures affect the economy. We have hands on-activities showing the different types of soil, how to pack a healthy lunch, and last we have them plant a radish seed in a cup for them to take home to see what it is like to grow their own food. These topics align with 5-LS1 of the Next Generation Science Standards, and 5.NF of the Common Core State Standard for Mathematics.

Major Program Impacts or Outcomes

We have gotten 100% positive feedback from all teachers on our presentations to their students.

I have a Bachelors Degree. I have been teaching elementary schools age children for 1 year on the importance of agriculture in the state of Delaware, healthy eating, farming as a viable career choice, the types of soils in our state, and giving them hands on experience with growing their own food.
