Classroom Resources

"Bee Line" K-6 newsletter: Utah AITC published three issues of this elementary newsletter. Issues of this 8-page educator publication can be found on our website, It is also distributed via an e-blast, if requested. Hard copies are also mailed, if requested.

"AgroWorld" secondary e-zine: Focuses on three curriculum areas: science, technology, and society. Four issues/year (Sept-Oct, Nov-Dec, Jan-Feb, April-May). As of 8/01/2013, Utah AITC uses the AgroWorld ScoopIt file prepared by NAITC.

New/revised resources were added to our e-learning site: Origami Parts of a Flower (Grades 5-12 science kit); Parts of a Flower poster (Grades 5-7 science); Honey Bees: A Pollination Simulation lesson (Grade 5 science); Inside the Egg, Hatching Chicks lesson (Grades K-3 science); Eggology lesson (K-3 science); How Does Your Garden Grow lesson (K-2 science); A is for Apple lesson (K-1 science); Advanced Placement Human Geography lessons: Agricultural Land Use in the U.S., Global Trade & Interdependence, Evolving Role of Women in Agriculture, GMOs & Organics, Global Food Security (Grades 9-12). Utah AITC website integrates our resources into a dynamic searchable curriculum map with core standards, lessons, and additional resources that are accessed in the Teacher Center along with our online course and our e-store. The resources may be browsed freely, but teachers may also save to a personal library.

Our social media presence includes a Facebook page (Utah Agriculture in the Classroom), Twitter account (Utah InterAgtion), and a Pinterest account (Utah Agriculture in the Classroom).

Major Program Accomplishments or Outputs

Seven Hatching Science embryology workshops for elementary teachers; several Food, Land, and People workshops for elementary teachers; AP Human Geography workshop; Arts are Core workshop; and Drones in Agriculture workshop for secondary teachers were conducted statewide.Eat, Learn, Teach" summer agricultural institute was held on the USU campus. The e-store generated 919 orders resulting in $64,560.31 of gross sales (a 63% increase over 2014).

Utah AITC provided 11 agriculture lessons for the Utah State Office of Education's College & Career Awareness course (required for all Utah 7th graders). Denise Stewardson, Utah AITC director, chairs the agriculture curriculum committee.

Five agriculture lessons were written for the Advanced Placement Human Geography course. (Lessons will be piloted in Spring 2016--eight teachers in four states.)

Six Utah AITC Classroom Grants of $500 each were awarded to Utah teachers who integrate agricultural literacy into their core curriculum.

Major Program Impacts or Outcomes

Approximately 125,600 students were taught with Utah AITC-created, statewide mandatory instructional units in science (4th grade soils, 5th grade heredity, 6th grade microorganisms), K-6 nutrition, Career and Technical Education Introduction (7th grade).

18 K-12 teachers completed the Utah AITC online course, Food, Land & People. Each teacher reaches between 25 and 100 students with 10-20 hours of classroom instruction to meet state standards (total of approximately 610 students in 2015).

516 preservice students from eight institutions of higher education received AITC instruction in science and social studies.

The Utah State Office of Education used 11 Utah AITC agriculture lessons in its required College & Career Awareness instruction--approximately 730 teachers and 25,000 students.


Denise Stewardson is an Extension Assistant Professor at Utah State University and statewide Director of the Utah Agriculture in the Classroom program. Denise taught Career & Technical Education for five years in middle and high school programs in Maryland and Virginia. She has been at Utah State University as a conference planner (1990-1995) and an educator for 16 years. In addition to her AITC director responsibilities, Denise teaches a breadth social science course in food literacy for Utah State University, College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.
