Classroom Resources

Amazing! Maryland Agriculture – inspired by the 2014 National Ag in the Classroom Conference experience teachers Karl Kidd and Kim Baker along with our elementary education director, Jeanne Mueller decided to write and publish a book about Maryland Agriculture. The book was the 2015 Ag Literacy book in Maryland. Many companion lessons were developed to support the book. Additionally, selected video segments from the Maryland Public Television program, “Maryland Farm and Harvest”, are included with the book. Middle School Chesapeake Food, Farm and the Bay - working in collaboration with the Farm Based Educator Network volunteers under the direction of MAEF’s middle school and natural resources education director, Peggy Eppig, over twenty lessons for were developed for Farm Based Education. This work was performed as part of a $25,000.00 grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust. Several of these lessons will be launched at the Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Education’s Conference in February, 2016. Horse Discovery Center Lessons - working in collaboration with volunteers from many of Maryland’s Horse Discovery Centers under the direction of MAEF’s middle school and natural resources education director, Peggy Eppig, over 30 lessons have been developed for use at Horse Discovery Centers. This work was performed in part using grants and donations from the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) and MHIB members. Major Program Accomplishments or Outputs

Ag Book in Every Public Elementary School - with the financial support of nearly every county farm bureau, a classroom set of Amazing! Maryland Agriculture is in every public elementary school in Maryland except for three counties. Lab in One County - Montgomery County Maryland is one of the most prosperous counties in the nation and one of the least Ag friendly. The Montgomery County Farm Bureau was successful in getting the County to support one of MAEF’s mobile science classrooms exclusively in their county visiting 28-30 elementary schools during each of the next 4 years. Teachers Attend National Conference - MAEF helped underwrite the cost of 3 teachers attending the National AITC Conference Chesapeake Food, Farm and the Bay - over 25 lessons developed for farm based educators to use for their middle school students. Horse Discovery Centers - over 30 middle school lessons have been developed to support Ag education at Maryland’s Horse Discovery Centers. Grants Awarded - MAEF awarded grants the following: Maryland Envirothon Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Education Future Harvest Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture LEAD Maryland Foundation Maryland FFA Foundation Urban Garden Grants - 18 grants in amount from $250 to $500 were awarded to school based urban gardens.

Major Program Impacts or Outcomes

- Had a presence in all 23 counties and Baltimore City - Ag Showcase reached over 39,500 people directly -"The Buzz" bi-weekly e-newsletter reaches nearly 2,000 teachers in Maryland and the region with resources and information - Mobile Science Lab reaches over 39,000 students - FFA in Maryland continues to increase in Chapters numbers and students with 42 chapters and 2,397 members. MAEF manages Maryland FFA.
